Yes We Can!

Women's Initiative (10)Lebanese women have mobilized recently to stop domestic violence and to demand tougher rape laws. As women around the world have discovered, economic power paves the road for better treatment and more opportunities. On Tuesday, March 20th at the Hilton Grand Habtoor, BLC Bank and IFC teamed up to present the Women Empowerment Initiative. Among the topics presented were Gender Diversity, the Challenges of SME’s and Women in Business. Ms. Cherie Blair was scheduled to attend but was unable due to a medical situation, her message was delivered by Ms. Henriette Kolb on behalf of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women. Mr. Maurice Sehnaoui gave the closing remarks on behalf of BLC Bank. An audience member expressed relief that BLC had not created a “plastic surgery loan” which brought applause. This was indeed about empowering women financially. Ms. Hanan Saab spoke about the many challenges she faced in starting her company but offered solid encouragement to women who wanted to follow in her footsteps. So ladies, if you have a passion or a dream, this might just be the help you need.WE 002 WE 032WE 139 WE 183WE 155  WE 192(Top Left)Ms. Rana Ghandour Salhab, Regional Talent and Communications Partner, Deloitte Middle East. Natalie Portman Faces Beirut

natalie (4)Last year, Natalie Portman was featured in this Dior Ad. Meanwhile, Armin Van Buren and Lara Fabian were both threatened with boycotts by Anti-Zionists. Gino at Gino's Blog posted this reply. It seems that the Anti-Zionists are also very Pro-Palestinian. At the moment, most Lebanese are too consumed with things like making a living, avoiding potholes, managing through horrific traffic, dealing with electricity shortages and inflation to care about all things Palestinian. Most don’t even own a Keffiyeh and most Lebanese are wondering where the Pro-Lebanese groups are in the absence of an effective and honest government. So this newest billboard by Dior has gotten international attention-Yahoo! News. Regardless of the controversy, the billboard stays. Not to mention, Natalie’s pretty face is nice to see on the drive in and out of Beirut.

The Phoenicians

home city (3)The Lebanese ability to revise and edit history along confessional lines is matched perfectly to another Lebanese talent of creating controversy and division in almost any case, nevertheless, this ad gently reminds us of Lebanon’s history of shipping, shipbuilding and the ancient Port of Beirut during Phoenician times.
